Why Weight Management and Personal Fitness is Important to Our Children’s Safety
If youre child is happy with their weight, you belong to the minority of parents in the world. Most young people we encounter today have a poor self image. Many of these young people poor self image results from issues surrounding their physical appearance. This poor self image contributes to lowered level of self confidence, which increases the likelihood of them being identified as a target by the bad guys in the world.
Study after study of convicted predators report that they typically select their victims based on their (the identified potential target) projected level of self confidence. The bottom line is that children and young people who appear to be confident as less likely to become victims.
Knowing this, we as the primary care givers must actively encourage our young people to manage their weight and self image. Not in an overbearing manner, that will only increase the severity of the issue. A positive approach and setting a good example will go much further than lecturing or ridiculing.
Recently there has been a lot of attention being paid to how out of shape and over weight our young people are. As a culture we are over weight. The problem is that as our children grow older, the heath issues will carry over into their adulthood and progressively get worse, resulting in higher health care costs for everyone.
This is a long term consequence of not managing our weight and our childrens weight.
In the short term as mentioned earlier, their self esteem and self image suffer, affecting their level of self confidence.
In the here and now, if something does happen to them, be it bullying or attempted abduction, how will they be able to escape the situation safely if they can not run for more than a few moments, before giving up? We must encourage them to never quit trying to escape to safety and to do that they must have the physical capacity to keep themselves safe.
Physical conditioning is a very important aspect of child safety, yet it is one that is frequently overlooked.
