Overlooking Acid Reflux Disease in Children

An 11-year-old boy in Boston developed a Gastro esophageal reflux Disease (GERD). According to his mother, Cathy, it was the end of June in the year 2005 when his son developed a cough which usually happens during sleep, and even during daytime. It is only a short dry cough symptom. His pediatrician thought it was only allergy, however, when his son was tested, result showed that his son had no allergy. According to her, it was his son’s asthma that relates to GERD.

Studies show that GERD is likewise normal to infants and children like in adults, though this fact is often times being overlooked. The symptoms come in continual sickness, coughing, and other respiratory trouble.

Children are vulnerable to GERD because of their immature digestive system. Truth is majority of the infants grow out of GERD once they reach the age of one year old.

The medical specialists further stated that symptoms for children may come in difficulty in swallowing foods, or failure to grow. The doctors recommended that in situation like this it is best to lessen the amount of acid in the children’s stomach before it could lead to acid reflux, since this disease is not very curable in children.

However, the doctor suggested some approaches to avoid acid reflux on children; an example of these is burping the infant quite a few times during feeding, or letting the infant stay in an erect position for 30 minutes after nourishing.

Although, for a child ages three and up, doctors suggested to keep them off from sodas that includes caffeine like soft drinks, carbonated drinks, spicy foods like peppermint, acidic foods like citrus fruits, too much chocolate, and fried and fatty foods. Ideally, establishing a healthy eating habit diet can really decrease the acid reflux in children.

It is also suggested that children will eat smaller meals before sleeping, if possible, do not allow them to eat two to three hours before sleeping, also, elevate the head of their bed for at least 30 degrees.

Further treatments include the use of H2 blockers; this is available in any drugs store. Prevacid, proton plump inhibitors, can also be used in treating acid flux for children.

However, if these treatments fail to stop the symptoms, other treatment method needs to be done. It is very atypical, but doctors’ recommends surgery, this is so far the best treatment for relentless symptoms which do not anymore counter to other treatments.

The Esophageal reflux surgery for children is designated for children who have had unsuccessful medical treatments, and continuous surgery is essential as the child grows.

Now, if you get confused whether when is the time to consult a pediatrician regarding acid reflux. The answer is you observe, observe the amounts of vomiting of the child, if it already comes out in green or yellow or appears to be like blood or coffee grounds, there difficulty in breathing after vomiting, and there is pain in swallowing, immediately consult a pediatrician before the symptom gets aggravated.

So to prevent the occurrence of this disease, stay away from the habit of leaning forward after eating, or worse, sleeping after taking a large amount of food.

Take note, advanced acid reflux disease has a great possibility to end serious medical complications, and it may lead to hospitalization.

Be keen of the possible symptoms so will not overlook it. Take care of your kids.

Once upon a time, a keep fit regime consisted mostly of a few laps of a cinder track followed by a restorative cup of something sugary and thick. And it worked, up to a point, but the fact that human life expectancy has grown in the western world shows that we are developing more and better ways of keeping our bodies finely tuned. Although coincidentally obesity is also at an all time high, the truth is that people in the past put things into their body that would be more or less illegal today. And no competition runner is going to swallow a cup of cola right after a race now – at least if their coach has any idea what they are about.

After Usain Bolt’s amazing double Olympic gold and world record performances in 2008, he let the world in on his diet secret – he ate Kentucky Fried Chicken. An advertising coup for the fast food chain, no doubt, but the fact of the matter is that he won despite what fast food did for him. He’s just that fast, that good a trainer and that mentally strong. But it should not be a message for children to eat fried chicken before races – back in the days gone past people could eat what they wanted, but they didn’t run 100 meters in a sub 9.7 time, unless what they ate gave them food poisoning and the bathroom was that far away.

Back then it was considered a good idea to drink a fizzy carbonated soda after a race because the sugar was good for energy – and in the short term it is. But it is also highly acidic, and with a combination of nervous energy and physical exertion already doing a lot to heighten stomach acid levels, dropping a carbonated drink into the mix is the equivalent of feeding dynamite to a fire-breathing dragon. It will go off, and the results will be neither pretty nor healthy

Antacid Alternatives and Preventions

Heartburn is painful and is known as gastroesophageal reflux, a digestive disorder. It occurs when the esophagus valve weakens or does not work properly. This disorder allows acid to flow backward into the esophagus from the stomach.

It is considered a disease and could carry symptoms such as stomach pain, belching, queasiness and bloating. If these symptoms are accompanied by cold sweats, nausea, a squeezing sensation in the chest, chest pain, pain that radiates to the jaw, neck and arm; seek emergency care immediately.

Richard Leigh, M.D., a retired physician in Fort Collins Colorado states even though antacids make your stomach feel better they are not healthy. Taking antacids could interfere with the natural digestive process. They could destroy your ability to absorb nutrients. Over-the-counter antacid contains excessive sodium, aluminum, magnesium and calcium. Over a period of time, this could cause a mineral imbalance.

The symptoms of too little or too much acid are the same. In fact, in many cases the stomach does not generate enough acids to digest the food properly. Before taking an antacid find out which it is. Dr Leigh recommends additional hydrochloric acid (the substance needed to break down proteins into amino acids) such as Gas-X Extra Strength before meals. If too little acid is the problem, you will get immediate relief.

If you feel a mild burning sensation, then the problem is too much acid. Drink a glass of milk or a cup of water mixed with 1/4 or 1/3 teaspoon of baking soda to stop the burning sensation.

James Balch, M.D., a physician in Trophy Club Texas recommends drinking a cup of aloe gel for too much acid and to get instant relief. The gel aids in the protection and healing of the esophagus. Be sure to buy internal use aloe.

It would be great not to have heartburn. Here are a few preventions.

*Avoid fatty foods; they cause acid to enter the esophagus by weakening the esophageal valve.

*Avoid eating large meals because this will encourage the body to make a lager amount of acids.

*Avoid eating four hours before bedtime. Lying down after eating allows acid to flow into the esophagus.

*Avoid carbonated drinks (colas and beer), tomatoes and citrus fruits. These foods may trigger the stomach to make extra acid.

*Spicy foods are another reason for the stomach to produce extra acid.

*An ingredient in chocolate is a trigger to make acid.

* Tight clothing can make heartburn worse (belt, support hose and pants).

*Avoid spearmint and peppermint after meals as they can loosen the esophageal valve.

*Being 10 to 20 percent over weight can cause heartburn.

*Smoking can weaken your esophageal muscle.

There are other reasons that can cause heartburn such as taking aspirin and ibuprofen. Illness such as cancer could cause excessive acid and eating processed foods.

Keep in mind that the symptoms of angina and heart attack sometimes mimic those of heartburn. If symptoms persist with no relief, get emergency medical help.
